Oyster 45/12 - Apparition
Apparition has been much loved by her owner and equally well maintained over the years. She has now returned to our office after 000’s of miles and ready to go for more. She presents extremely well and is easy to handle thanks to her sloop rig and in-mast furling, allowing reefing from the cockpit. Below decks she sleeps six in three cabins with two additional seaberths possible in the saloon. She has a beautiful classic teak joinery and is definitely worth a look!
OWNER'S REMARKS
I purchased this Oyster 45 from Oyster Brokerage in 2003, having decided that buying a pre-owned Oyster was preferable to a new mass production boat at a similar price. Now, after 10 years of ownership, without question I would do the same again. The quality of the yacht, combined with the incredible (yes – and dependable) Oyster after sales service is an outstanding combination.
Whether from crew, guest or onlooker, I have received so many compliments about Apparition, which has made me feel so proud of her. I have sailed her many ‘000’s of miles – and followed the discipline of keeping a yacht ‘ocean ready’.
Since her refit at Manoel Island Yacht Yard in Malta in 2009, my maintenance mantra has been replacement rather than repair. Look carefully at these sales particulars and note how much equipment has been changed and upgraded. Her main services have been looked after as they should. The delivery skipper who brought Apparition to Ipswich from the Caribbean told me her Volvo was the sweetest engine he had experienced in a long time. She has always been serviced and looked after by reputable and Oyster approved yards and agents: Berthon Lymington, Manoel Island Malta, ARL Antigua, CYM Tortola to name a few.
We have enjoyed race wins and places at Oyster regattas, but it’s her cruising performance that impresses. On ocean passages: 1st in class Bermuda-Azores and 1st again Azores-Portugal (ARC Europe 2007). We might have won the Antigua-Bermuda leg as well, but for a stop at Barbuda on the way! In ARC 2011, we were 4th in class and 24th overall out of over 200 starters in the cruising division. We have sailed 200nm/day whilst on passage and we achieved our top speed of 13.8 knots…under autopilot.
As for her sea-keeping ability, she has never given me any cause for concern. Even during a full Atlantic gale, my crew were totally relaxed and my son produced bacon & eggs for breakfast! The Oyster 45 is a classic cruising yacht: seaworthy and dependable, comfortable - and fast.
Lastly, if you are interested in her, please reserve your judgement about installing a bowthruster until you have experienced how beautifully she manoeuvres with that 18” Max-Prop… and if you purchase her, I’m sure she will give you as much pleasure as she has given me – and that will make you very happy indeed.
